Baltimore, Maryland, Cathedral Street, c1925

Cathedral Street is home to Baltimores the first high-rise apartment building, the Severn. Built in 1894, the Severn towered over the neighborhood as the tallest building overlooking Mt. Vernon Place. After its construction, area residents successfully lobbied the state legislature to pass a bill prohibiting further development of structures taller than 70 feet in the neighborhood.
