Baltimore, Maryland, North Charles Street, c1925

Among the oldest thoroughfares in America, Charles Street is said to predate the establishment of Baltimore itself. The then-unnamed street passed by the first house in Baltimore Town, owned by John Fleming, around which the city sprung up. By the turn of the 20th century, Charles Street had become the commercial core of the exclusive residential neighborhood surrounding the Washington Monument.
