Built to commemorate Baltimore�s defeat of the British in the War of 1812, the 39-foot Battle Monument at Fayette and Calvert streets is renowned for its unique architecture. The monument features an Egyptian-style base with 18 layers of marble--recognizing the 18 states that were part of the Union at the time of the war.
