Baltimore, Maryland, The Phoenix Shot Tower, c1927

Upon completion in 1828, the 215-foot red brick Phoenix Shot Tower was the tallest structure in the United States. Two-and-a-half million pounds of drop shot for pistols, rifles and cannons were produced there until 1892, by dropping molten lead from the top of the tower into cold water at the bottom through a sieve. New methods of producing shot thereafter made the Tower obsolete.
