Baltimore, Maryland, View from Fort McHenry, c1914

Fort McHenry, a star-shaped fort on Baltimore's Chesapeake waterfront, was the location where Francis Scott Key witnessed the survival of an American flag through heavy British naval bombardment. After the national anthem-inspiring events of the War of 1812, the fort would serve as training grounds and as a prison before being resigned from active military use in 1912.
