Boston, Massachusetts, Harvard Bridge Crossing the Charles River, c1904

Initially, there was enough resistance to the construction of the Harvard Bridge that the city of Cambridge sought state aid in compelling their neighbors across the Charles to cooperate. First opened to traffic in 1891, the bridge proved a boon on both sides of the river. Businesses in Cambridge were now easily accessible to residents of Bostons wealthier neighborhoods, and developers wasted no time filling the marshlands on the Cambridge side.
