Upon completion in 1883, the Brooklyn Bridge became the longest suspension bridge in the world, quickly earning its fame as a New York City landmark. As the only land passage between Brooklyn and Manhattan�then two separate cities�the bridge enabled easy foot and vehicle passage, further enabling the flow of commerce over the East River.
