Brooklyn, New York, Crossing the Brooklyn Bridge, c1909

At the time of its opening, the Brooklyn Bridge connected the first and the fourth largest cities in the United States. By drastically reducing commute times across the East River, the bridge created the possibility of living in Brooklyn and working in New York City, making the two cities economically indistinguishable. This interdependence was among the primary motivations for the 1898 incorporation of the five boroughs.
