Brooklyn, New York, Dry Dock at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, c1915

Established in 1801 by President John Adams, the Brooklyn Navy Yard grew throughout the 19th century to cover almost 200 acres, and to house four dry dock facilities for ship construction and repair. In the years leading up to US involvement in World War I, the Brooklyn Navy Yard launched four ships that saw action in the war, including the USS New York, built at Dry Dock 4 and launched in October 1912.
