Brooklyn, New York, Launch of the USS Vestal, c1908

The first yard-built ship was launched from the Brooklyn Navy Yard in 1820. Rising to peak production during World War II, workers earned the nickname �The Can-Do Shipyard.� The USS Vestal, launched in 1908, went on to serve as a repair ship in both world wars, receiving two battle stars for her service at Pearl Harbor during World War II.
