Brooklyn, New York, Plymouth Church, c1904

Founded in 1847 by New England transplants, Plymouth Church rose to fame thanks to its original pastor, Henry Ward Beecher, whose preaching opposed slavery. The church subsequently became a stop on the Underground Railroad. A cultural gathering place, it was also famous for popular public events that included speakers such as Mark Twain, Charles Dickens and Clara Barton.
