Brooklyn, New York, Surf Avenue in Coney Island, c1901

From 1880 until the Second World War, Coney Island was the largest amusement area in the United States, hosting several million visitors a year. In 1901, Surf Avenue became home to Loop the Loop, one of the first looping roller coasters in North America. Though it offered a much safer ride, the public was still more inclined to watch than ride, and it eventually went bankrupt.
