Construction finished on Detroit's Old City Hall in 1871, replacing the first city hall, which opened in 1835 and doubled as a market. With a 180-foot tall clock tower, the opulent new building towered over the rest of Campus Martius, pre-dating the city's first skyscraper by nearly 20 years.
