By the turn of the century, Savannah was a rapidly expanding city with a
booming international shipping port. As the population and economy grew,
the downtown area expanded and began to fill with new hotels and businesses.
Many of them lined Liberty Street, which grew to become one of the
city’s main thoroughfares.
