Charleston, South Carolina, Boxcars at the Shipyard, c1890

A thriving port during the Colonial period, several shipyards were built on the Cooper River across from Charlestons peninsula. An ordinance in place through the 1840s didnt allow tracks in city limits, so boxcars had to unload outside the city. By the late 19th century, the Civil War and Reconstruction Era had taken their toll on the economy, and shipyards handled fewer goods.
