A thriving port during the Colonial period, several shipyards were built on the Cooper River across from Charleston�s peninsula. An ordinance in place through the 1840s didn�t allow tracks in city limits, so boxcars had to unload outside the city. By the late 19th century, the Civil War and Reconstruction Era had taken their toll on the economy, and shipyards handled fewer goods.
