Charleston, South Carolina, Looking West up Broad Street, c1910

Comprised of federal, state, local and religious facilities, Charlestons so-called Four Corners of Law at the intersection of Meeting and Broad streets defined much of the citys early development. Prominent citizens set up residences south of the intersection, and the east was largely turned over to harbor facilities. The northern neighborhoods hosted fine and import retail establishments, while the west was home to domestic merchants and craftspeople.
