Charleston, South Carolina, Magnolia-on-the-Ashley, c1907

Magnolia-on-the-Ashley was a rice plantation established by the Drayton family on the Ashley River in 1676. The familys gardens steadily expanded throughout the next two centuries, until the Civil War nearly brought the plantation to ruin. Its salvation came when the family sold many acres and then opened their gates in 1870 as the first public gardens in America.
