Passenger steamships began operating on Lake Michigan in the 1840s, when cargo ships first brought fruit from the Michigan fruit belt to produce markets in Chicago and Milwaukee. The increased commerce, coupled with a readily available transportation route, resulted in public demand for excursions between the cities.
