In its early industrial days, the Chicago River was a study in river crossings, as engineers looked for better ways to build bridges. Hopes were high for the jack knife bridge, but it was ultimately deemed a failure for having too many moving parts. The subsequent bascule style became so successful that it was copied around the world and deemed the �Chicago Bridge.�
