Chicago, Illinois, Lake Shore Drive, c1907

The first mansion on Lake Shore Drive was built by businessman Potter Palmer. Upon completion, it became the largest private home in Chicago. Other wealthy Chicagoans soon followed suit and built neighboring mansions along the road. Backing up to the shores of Lake Michigan, the affluent area became known as the Gold Coast.
