Known locally as the Mother Church of Georgia, Christ Church was established
with the founding of Georgia in 1733. The original building burned down in
the Great Fire of 1796, and subsequent rebuilding efforts were decimated by a
hurricane. The church’s third and current incarnation was built 40 years later
atop its original foundation on Johnson Square.
