Cincinnati, Ohio, Along the Esplanade, c1910

The esplanade that once comprised Fountain Square was constructed in 1871. The plaza proved to be a popular gathering ground for both social and political purposes, especially in the years before heavy automobile traffic on Fifth Street, made accessing the space difficult. In the age of the automobile, Fifth Streets lanes were joined together and Fountain Square was repositioned as a corner lot.
