Cincinnati, Ohio, Cincinnati Central Parkway, c1927

Central Parkway follows the path of the Miami and Erie Canal, built from 1825 to 1845 to connect the Ohio River to Lake Erie. Because railroads proved more efficient, the canal was abandoned after the Civil War. In 1924, a subway project was begun in the old canal bed, but it too was abandoned in favor of a parkway.
