Elsinore Tower was built in 1883, its design inspired by a performance of Hamlet that had been put on in town. While functionally built as a valve house for the Cincinnati Water Works reservoir, its Shakespearean design was intended to enhance Eden Parks landscape and serve as its grand entrance. As the popularity of automobiles surged, however, the tower lost its appeal as the parks primary entrance in favor of the car-friendly Art Museum uphill.
