Cincinnati, Ohio, Fountain Square, c1900

Before the 1871 dedication of the Tyler-Davidson Fountain, Fountain Square was a butcher market. The unveiling of the fountain, however, and its homage to the river responsible for the frontier citys growth, helped create a new civic center. In the early 20th century, three different U.S. Presidents visited the area encompassing Fountain and Governors squares during visits to Cincinnati.
