Cincinnati, Ohio, Mount Adams Rising from the River, c1900

When the Mount Adams Incline opened in 1872, it connected downtown Cincinnati to the large hill to its east. Previously, Mount Adams had been the site of a luxurious estate that featured a vineyard and an observatory, but the neighborhoods proximity to the Ohio River quickly attracted working class laborers to the area.
