The John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge, then coined the Covington-Cincinnati Suspension Bridge, was commissioned in 1856 to solve the problem of transportation between developing cities in Ohio and Kentucky. With the Ohio River already overrun with steamboat traffic, a suspension bridge was determined to be ideal. Between cautious deployment of new building technologies and the outbreak of the Civil War, construction on the bridge was not completed for nearly 10 years.
