Cleveland, Ohio, Cleveland Coal Docks, c1938

The Cleveland & Pittsburgh, part of the Pennsylvania Railroad, became the first railroad company to replace wood with coal as a fuel source in 1856. The C&P was Pennsylvania Railroads first line to Cleveland and had originally been created to transport passengers, but soon the company was focused on shipping coal. Trains began carrying in coal from the companys extensive rail network and exchanging it for iron ore from lake freighters.
