Cleveland, Ohio, Monument in Public Square, c1900

Included in the original city plan for Cleveland, Public Square was always intended to be a central meeting ground for residents. And so, its early development reflected the growth of the city itself. In 1879, the square became the first public space in the world to successfully demonstrate electric streetlights. Its legacy as an important civic hub was further solidified with the dedication of the impressive Soldiers and Sailors Monument in 1894.
