Cleveland, Ohio, On a Cleveland Bridge, c1916

A city split by the Cuyahoga River, Cleveland developed thanks in part to the many bridges built to traverse the watery expanse. Shortly after the citys founding, the original Center Street Bridge became Clevelands first, replacing early ferries that shuttled residents from the rivers eastern to western shore. Clevelands bridges evolved with the times, from chained floating logs to complex steel structures enabling transportation and industry.
