This stretch of Euclid Avenue was first envisioned as an entertainment destination after the Second World War. The State and Ohio theaters were the first to open there in February 1921; three more theaters opened within the next year. Dubbed Playhouse Square, the area thrived under more than 40 years of vaudeville, motion pictures and stage plays. The Allen, State, Ohio and Palace theaters all closed in 1969; local preservationists later restored the area.
