In 1915, the industrial town of Shelton, Connecticut, was incorporated as a city. Initially settled by the English in the 1600s as part of Stratford, access to waterpower from the adjacent Housatonic River allowed the village to thrive as a manufacturing center in the 18th and 19th centuries. Though the newly independent city was originally called Huntington, it was later renamed after one of the areas chief manufacturers, the Shelton Company.
