In 1915, the industrial town of Shelton, Connecticut, was incorporated as a city. Initially settled by the English in the 1600s as part of Stratford, access to waterpower from the adjacent Housatonic River allowed the village to thrive as a manufacturing center in the 18th and 19th centuries. Though the newly independent city was originally called Huntington, it was later renamed after one of the area�s chief manufacturers, the Shelton Company.
