Connecticut, Crossing the West River, New Haven, c1900

The West River, which runs from the town of Bethany to the West Haven Harbor, was used for various industrial purposes during colonial times. Manufacturers were able to divert the stream to power mills along the river, contributing to the early economy of the New Haven area. In 1889, much of the land surrounding the river was converted into Edgewood Park in order to provide a recreational escape for nearby residents.
