Denver, Colorado, Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, c1925

Shortly after the 1902 groundbreaking of Denvers Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, work was halted on the structure when it was discovered that the rector had squandered funds appropriated for the construction on unrealized investments. Work did not resume until 1905, when a recently appointed assistant leveraged the faithful among Denvers newly successful businessmen into donating enough to cover the losses.
