Denver, Colorado, Chamberlin Observatory, c1905

University of Denver astronomy professor Herbert Howe spearheaded the building of the Chamberlin Observatory. He began raising funds for the roof-topped observatory in 1883, and by 1891 the buildling was completed as the first official University structure. Three years later, he outfitted it with its prized 20-inch telescope lens, then one of the longest in the world, which he personally transported on a train from Massachusetts.
