Established as a mining town in 1858, Denver out-competed nearby municipalities by successfully bidding to route regional transit, including the Leavenworth & Pikes Peak Express wagon lines, through the growing city. The 1870 launch of a privately funded transcontinental railroad extension cemented the citys position as the premier business destination in the Rocky Mountains and helped it grow to rival many longer established cities in the East.
