Established as a mining town in 1858, Denver out-competed nearby municipalities by successfully bidding to route regional transit, including the Leavenworth & Pike�s Peak Express wagon lines, through the growing city. The 1870 launch of a privately funded transcontinental railroad extension cemented the city�s position as the premier business destination in the Rocky Mountains and helped it grow to rival many longer established cities in the East.
