Denver, Colorado, Mountain States Telephone Trucks, c1915

In sparsely populated areas like rural Colorado, the enormous amount of labor and intermittent oversight inherent in building telecommunications infrastructure gave rise to widespread corruption among workers and their field bosses. When Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Company formed in 1911, its owners sought to curtail this misconduct with the purchase of heavy-duty trucks, which they used to ease the difficulty of raising poles by hand and to more closely oversee diffuse employees.
