Peering southeast from where 17th Street met Broadway and 17th Avenue, the skyline was once dominated by the triangular Brown Palace hotel and the Central Presbyterian Church, constructed one year apart, in 1892 and 1891, respectively. At the time, a night in a high-end room at the Palace was valued at 5 dollars.
