At the turn of the century, Detroit emerged as a key transportation hub, due largely to the rise of shipbuilding and manufacturing industries along the Great Lakes. In the design of commercial buildings, stone became one of the most important architectural resources. With the high cost of shipping stones from far away high, stone yards sprang up to provide for the city�s builders.
