Detroit, Michigan, Entrance to Water Works Park, c1902

Detroits Water Works Park opened in 1876 as part of one of the earliest municipal water systems in the country. A few years later, the citys pumping station and standpipe tower were completed providing drinkable water and a focal point to the massive 110-acre park. The florally decorated, water-powered clock greeted guests near the entrance, while the top of the 185-foot pressure stabilizing tower offered unparalleled views of Detroit.
