Bois Blanc, or Boblo, Island was an important strategic point in the early development of Detroit. Fort Amherstburg was built here in 1796 to secure the Detroit River after the city was transferred from British to American control. By the end of the 19th century, the island had become a popular destination for Detroit residents and tourists, with private owners and ferry companies establishing parks and other resort attractions throughout the island.
