In 1894, the 132-foot Hurlbut Gate opened as the grand entrance to Water Works Park. The Park�s function ended up being twofold: to provide clean drinking water to the residents of Detroit, and to serve as a popular recreational space that catered to residents and grew to attract tourists from hundreds of miles away.
