Detroit, Michigan, Livingstone Channel Opening Day, c1912

Instrumental to Great Lakes shipping success, William Livingstone served more than 20 years as president of the Lake Carriers Association, where he persuaded the federal government to fund shipping infrastructure projects. One such project on the lower Detroit River was named in his honor. On opening day, following a grand ceremony, the steamer William Livingstone passed through the 11-mile channel to a 21-gun salute, an honor normally reserved for the President.
