Rochester's Driving Park Bridge opened to traffic in 1890, the only bridge to cross the Genesee River north of the city. Two previous bridges attempted on the site, in 1819 and 1856, collapsed within months of construction, making the survival and 96-year lifespan of this third bridge a monumental success. The bridge met it's fate at the hands of explosives, in a controlled demolition, and the newest bridge was erected in it's place, in 1988.
