The San Francisco Ferry Building opened its doors in 1898, replacing the large
wooden union depot and ferry house. The building’s steel frame and structural
integrity arrived just in time for the tumultuous century ahead. In the early 1900s
alone, the Ferry Building survived two massive earthquakes and the devastating
fires than followed the quake of 1906.
