Connecticut, The State House in Hartford, Connecticut, c1906

Until 1875, Connecticut had two state capitals, New Haven and Hartford. Designed by a cathedral architect, the Connecticut State Capitol was built in celebration of Hartford becoming the only capital. Its opulent materials include marble and red slate from Connecticut, granite from Rhode Island, marble from Italy and the requisite gold-leaf dome found in many government buildings in the northeast.
