Kansas City, Missouri, A Fountain for Horses, c1900

Some of the first fountains of Kansas City were built to serve the practical purpose of providing water for horses, birds and dogs. Such early fountains were built in strategic locations throughout the city, and had spouts to circulate the water and keep it fresh, preventing the spread of disease. Kansas City now boasts more than 100 fountains of all shapes, sizes and styles spread throughout the city.
