Construction of the Coates Hotel began in the 1850s but was halted during the Civil War, when the Union army staked the hotel for its barracks. Soon after the war ended, design resumed and the hotel soon after became known as the hotel of the Presidents, for its role hosting such notable guests as Grover Cleveland and Theodore Roosevelt.
